ARLENE KLEIN has had a love affair with animals forever.  She has a passion for companion animals, respect for all living creatures, and concern for the health and welfare of the animals that share our world.
    
Her dogs were valued members of her family and she was dedicated to their well-being.  All her dogs were formally obedience trained.  She has exhibited in Breed Conformation since l982, owner handling her first show dog to a Specialty Show win and to his American Championship. 

Deeply concerned for the millions of animals that are neglected, abused, lost and abandoned, she produced a video on responsible pet ownership.  A DAY IN THE LIFE of a DOG gained national acclaim.  In l99l it was nominated for a DOG WRITERS' ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA Maxwell Award.

She has served on the Board of Trustees of MORRIS ANIMAL FOUNDATION since l99l as a Trustee and  Canine Vice President.  She was elected to the honorary position of Trustee Emeritus in 2000 and continued to serve the Foundation. She was re-elected as a Trustee in 2005 and returned to her position as Trustee Emeritus in 2011. She has traveled nationwide on behalf of MORRIS ANIMAL FOUNDATION and has been a guest speaker at many animal-related events. She chaired the Committee on Donor Relations since 2005.

She served on the Board of Directors of SAFI- Specialists for Animals Foundation, Inc., o
n the Board of Directors of THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF SARASOTA COUNTY, INC. and the Board of Directors of SOUTHEASTERN GUIDE DOGS, INC. She was elected to the Board of Governors of DOG WRITERS’ ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA.  Since becoming a member of DWAA in 1990, she has judged many categories for Writing Competition.  She is a member of THE YORKSHIRE TERRIER CLUB OF AMERICA and many animal-related organizations.  Presently, she dedicates her time working with selected dog/cat rescue groups, raising funds for their cause.

She and her six Yorkshire Terriers participated in THE LATHAM FOUNDATION'S video production, CANINE GOOD CITIZEN. They exemplify what Canine Good Citizen is all about.  The video was awarded the DWAA Maxwell Award for Best Video in 1993.She was elected as an Honorary Member of THE LATHAM FOUNDATION in 1995.

Having known the sorrow of losing her dogs to various diseases, she authored a book of poems on pet loss.  I NEVER WANTED TO SAY GOODBYE , published 1995, is a  collection of poems to comfort those who mourn the loss of a treasured pet, with a Foreword by Betty White.  It was nominated for a DOG WRITERS' ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA Maxwell Award. The Revised Edition was published January, 2011. Five star reviews www.amazon.com  A percentage of Total Sales was donated to MORRIS ANIMAL FOUNDATION for Canine Health Studies. One of the poems was published in the Sarasota and Manatee Poets Anthology, (Sarasota Poetry Theatre Press, 1997) The poem, Erica’s Song, was published in the DWAA Award winning book, Dog Spelled Backwards, Soulful Writing by Literary Dog Lovers, authored by Mordecai Siegal. (St. Martin’s Press, New York 2007)

Her poem, SOULS NEVER LEAVE, published 2012, was awarded a Certificate of Nomination for DOG WRITERS' ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA 2013 Writing Competition, Poetry Category.

She has written articles about the human-animal bond and animal welfare, which have appeared in national publications. She served as a judge for the FLORIDA ANIMAL HEALTH FOUNDATION 2002 Hall of Fame  Awards.  The awards honor animals that have made outstanding contributions to society.

She is the creator and designer of SCOUT’S DOGGIE NOTE CARDS and KITTY CAT NOTE CARDS, featuring NALA, which are sold nationwide. A  percentage of Total Sales was donated to MORRIS ANIMAL FOUNDATION for Canine and Feline Health Studies.

She is the creator and designer of THE “PAWFECT TIME” PENDANT WATCH, which is sold worldwide.  A percentage of Total Sales was donated to MORRIS ANIMAL FOUNDATION to support Canine Cancer Research.  Today, she works with numerous animal non profits to help them raise money for their cause, by DONATING the watches to them.

She and her husband live in Sarasota, Florida with MISSY, a beautiful RAGDOLL cat, who they adopted June 16, 2019.  Her beloved NALA, the little cat who found them, after SCOUT, their beloved Yorkshire Terrier, went to the Rainbow Bridge,  joined Scout April 29, 2019.
